Course : (ΦΣΓ134) Early Literacy and School Literacy: Theories and teaching practices (MA)
Curriculum : The aim of the course is to investigate literacy not only as a linguistic aquisitionn but as a social structure. It brings out the relationship between research and literacy, through specific theoritical approaches ( New Literacy Studies, & multi - literacies). The course focuses on pre - school years, since it is the perfect example in which plenty are the factors that define all those proceedures children follow, in order to understand the real meaning of the texts and become parts of the society, throughout written speech. Finally, current researches have shown that the motives and the linguistic competence that the children acquire, concerning literacy, through their experiences either at home or at school, play an important role for their future success in school and furthermore their lives. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: ● Report the purposes and the aims of linguistic education, the reinforcement of communicative skills and emergent literacy , during pre - school education. ● Explain the contribution of written texts to the children’s literacy proceedure. ● Recognise the main methods of early literacy. ● Evaluate relevant research outcomes. ● Design and apply research projects. ● Refer to family literacy matters in a more scientific way. ● Tell the difference between literacy practices in Kindergarten and in primary school, as well as to justify them. ● Design and apply literacy activities in order to develop and evaluate children’s literacy and linguistic skills. ● Design, organise and evaluate educational activities, that are based on current educational approaches and support children’s linguistic development. ● Be familiar with matters that are relevant to early literacy and refer to bilingual children or to children from less privileged environments.
