Curriculum : The purpose of this course is to provide the opportunity for postgraduate students to engage critically with educational policy theories and concepts, and examine new developments in educational policy and practice. More specifically they will analyze and reflect upon fundamental educational policy issues, become familiarized with contemporary developments in education policy in institutional, local, national and global contexts, enhance their understanding of educational issues in other countries and develop their critical awareness of how international comparisons are used in policy-making. Additionally, the course aims to enable students to apply the insights provided in the course to their own professional experiences.
Outline :
This course will encourage students to gain critical insights into and raise fundamental questions about the following issues:
- The educational policy discourse, the educational decision making process and the educational control systems.The politics of educational changes, the discussion about the relationship between educational changes, economic changes, productivity, education policy formation and the role of the state.
- Globalisation as a discourse and process with particular emphasis on its effects on and relevance to education (emphasis will be given on specific educational practices).
- The school empowerment and the school culture.
- The politics of the school curriculum: the curriculum development process in the learning society and its relation to globalisation, multiculturalism and the organization of knowledge in modern educational settings.

Teaching style: Lectures (with the use of power point) and students’ individual or group work.
Assessment: By coursework essays and a final assignment of up to 5,000 words.
