Course : (ESC_505) Language Teaching I
Curriculum : The course intends to familiarize students with basic concepts and theories of educational linguistics aiming at language teaching during first years of school. In particular, the course aims at increasing student knowledge and critical insight in terms of linguistic concepts, theories, and approaches in order to help them develop language-based school activities in a creative and critical way.

Outline : • Introduction: The necessity of educational linguistics-traits of language • The most important linguistic theories: (Saussure, Chomsky, behaviorism) • Levels of language analysis (phonetics, syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics) • Sociolinguistic and pragmatic approaches (Halliday, Hymes, Bernstein, Labov, Vygotsky) • Language teaching approaches • Genres in kindergarten • Literacy pedagogy: Written and spoken language – Natural and school literacy • Literacy as a social practice: Family/natural, school, emergent literacy. Different socio-cultural conceptions of literacy • From literacy to multiliteracies • The Curriculum for Kindergarten • Basic principles of designing teaching material for kindergarten
