Course : (ESC_335) Issues of Bilingual Education
Curriculum : The goal of the course is to make students familiar with theoretical issues of bilingualism and bilingual education, aiming to render students able to deal with the contemporary multilingual and multicultural classroom taking advantage of all student linguistic repertoires in language teaching. By the end of the course students should be able to: • understand the concepts of bilingualism/multilingualism and minority languages • draw a distinction between individual and social bilingualism • identify models and types of bilingual education • understand the cultural, social and linguistic factors that affect the different typers of bilibngual education • define bilingual competence of individuals and societies • understand the bilingual literacy • perceive the limguistic and cultural diversity in Greece and evaluate the educational policies regarding bilingualism • become familiar with the modern teaching approaches to second language learning focusing on the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies, multimodality, translanguaging, and identity texts • perceive the contribution of drawing on all student linguistic repertoires and the multimodal way of communication to second language learning

Outline : • Βilingualism/multilingualism as a «natural» and diachronical phenomenon • Definitions of bilingualism and bilingual competences • Individual and social bilingualism • Dimensions of bilingualism (sociolinguistics context of bilingualism, early/late bilingualism, simultaneous/consecutive bilingualism, bilingual competence, bilingualism and educational outcomes) • Language contact • Cummins theories focusing on the relation between bilingualism and education • Models and types of bilingual education • Bilingual literacy • Factors affecting second language learning • Methods and approaches to second language teaching • Literacy/(multi)literacies in contemporary multilingual and multicultural societies • Modern teaching practices of language and bilingualism (multimodality, Translanguaging, identity texts) • Linguistic and cultural diversity in Greece and education policies and practices of bilingual education
