Description : The course discuses main concepts of aesthetics and aesthetic education. It also examines: - main concepts and research areas of aesthetics and aesthetic education; - contemporary theoretical discussions about art and aesthetic experience and their impact on aesthetic and art education; - aesthetic education as fostering students’ ability to understand, appreciate and respond to meanings emergent from art forms; - theories of aesthetic and art education as well as their impact and applications on educational practices.

Outline :

The course develops through two distinct but closely intertwined parts: a) mapping out the content and boundaries of aesthetics and highlighting the interrelations between aesthetics, aesthetic and art education; b) approaching art as an original/creative language and examining the significance of aesthetic literacy as a basis for an aesthetics-based art education.

The themes examined are: • Origin of aesthetics and short survey of contemporary aesthetic theories • Issues connected with the definition of art, interpretation and meaning of the work of art • Presuppositions for the construction of aesthetic education as a distinct educational area • Critical examination of misunderstandings and misinterpretations connected to the educational discourse and practice of aesthetic education. • Presentation of certain modern and contemporary aesthetic and art education theories. • Planning and implementation of aesthetics-based art education programs
